The Future of San Pedro Parks

Filed under: Angels Gate, Events, Point Fermin, Royal Palms, White Point — Jeniffer January 24, 2008 @ 2:19 pm

Tonight there is a public meeting sponsored by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks to find out how you feel about the parks and recreation space in Los Angeles, specifically San Pedro. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Peck Park Auditorium, 560 N. Western Ave. in San Pedro. Whether you are for open space, youth sports or (gasp!) both here is your opportunity to help the parks department with their five year plan.

If you cannot attend the meeting there will be a second meeting February 11th in Wilmington. You can also fill out a simple 8-question online survey which can take less than 15 minutes of your time. Community input needs to be received before the end of February so act now.

Graffiti in the Palisades

Tagging

Graffiti, or “tagging” in the case shown above this weekend at Wilder’s Addition on Paseo del Mar, is a way for gangs to mark their “turf” and let other gangs know of their presence. It also can be bored delinquents with nothing better to do than vandalize property.

What should you do when you see graffiti in the Palisades? Reporting graffiti is easy to do by telephone or online. Before reporting note the details such as location, cross street, surface type and color.

Call it in:
Call the easy-to-remember 3-1-1 for the Los Angeles Citywide Services Directory (this number is actually good for reaching any non-emergency public service in the city). This number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Office of Community Beautification will then contact a community-based graffiti removal program, like GAP - the Gang Alternatives Program - to remove the graffiti.

Use the online form:
Report the graffiti online by clicking on L.A. City’s On-line Graffiti Removal Request Form.

If a particular location keeps getting hit by taggers over and over again the Office of Community Beautification will provide free paint, rollers and other supplies to residents interested in removing the graffiti themselves. This avoids the approximate four-day wait time for the graffiti abatement team to come out. Just call 3-1-1 to request this service.
