A public meeting regarding the proposed South Region High School No.15 (SRHS #15) at Angels Gate is coming up. The focus of this meeting is to discuss potential effects the school may have on the neighborhood that should be considered in the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR). Those potential effects include issues such as traffic, parking, noise, graffiti, crime, etc. This is your chance to voice any concerns you may have. The meeting date is Thursday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m. at Dana Middle School auditorium.
Councilwoman Janice Hahn and Niko’s Pizzeria are holding a fundraiser this Saturday to raise money for the family of Officer Randal Simmons. Officer Simmons was the first officer in the Los Angeles City’s SWAT team to be killed in the line of duty since its inception in 1967. He was an Rancho Palos Verdes resident and is survived by his wife, Lisa, a 15-year old son and 13-year old daughter.
The fundraiser will be from 10 a.m. to midnight and 50% of sales will benefit the LAPFCU Blue Ribbon Trust Fund/Officer Randal Simmons.

“We’re going to build a school here.” said Rod Hamilton, Regional Development Manager for LAUSD at last night’s community schematic design meeting. Plans are in the works for a 810-seat high school (South Region High School #15) to begin construction some time in 2009 with an opening date in 2012. The design also allows for the possible addition of another 405 seats after four years for a total of 1,215 students.
The above drawing is based on my memory of the presentation last night by Dennis McFadden of CO Architects. The school will be built on the west side of LAUSD property at Angels Gate. As plans are now, the Marine Mammal Care Center, the International Bird Rescue Research Center and the Point Fermin Outdoor Education Center will remain. All other entities on the west side, such as the Skills Center, Early Education Center and Continuation H.S., have an unknown future.
Here are some notes on the design:
* One-story buildings: Gym, food (cafeteria/food prep), auditorium
* Two-story buildings: Admin/Library, HS#1, HS#2
* Three-story buildings: proposed HS#3
* There will be no swimming pool or football field. Plans include a soccer field, baseball fields and courts. There may be additional parking near the courts.
* Despite numerous community concerns about traffic on Alma Street and parking no answers were given except that traffic and parking would be studied in the Environmental Impact Report (EIR). The current plan is for 2.5 parking spaces per classroom with 30 classrooms. That’s 75 parking spaces. If/when the school is enlarged to 1,215-seats there will be 45 classrooms.
* The main entrance will be off Alma St. although there seems to be some pessimistic talk about a Gaffey & Barlow-Saxton Rd. being used as an additional entrance.
* The high school falls under the rules of the California Coastal Commission so only native plants will be used. Sycamores are to be planted on the slope along Alma St. with indigenous plants elsewhere.
* The presentation showed no sound barrier between LAUSD property and the neighbors on 30th St. or 36th St.
A scoping meeting open to the community will be held some time around April. We’ve invited Mr. Hamilton to speak at the Palisades Residents Association Annual Meeting in May. Details will announced soon. Please feel free to leave comments about SRHS #15 below.

In 1937 and 1958 two 6-mile tunnels were built to carry treated wastewater from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to outfalls 1 1/2-miles off shore. These tunnels, which traverse under White Point in the Palisades, are large enough to drive a car through. The Sanitation District of Los Angeles County (LACSD) wants to dig a new tunnel under San Pedro at the cost of $1 to $2 billion.
The LACSD is holding a public workshop in San Pedro to invite public input.
