Make some NOISE!

NOISE yard signs
Yard signs available from NOISE.

The controversy over a proposed high school at Angels Gate continues. Local residents have formed an organization called NOISE (Neighbors Organized and Involved to Support Education). This group declares that “we all support educating students, but we are willing to make noise to strongly state that a new 1,215-seat campus at Angel’s Gate is not the best way to utilize funds to educate high school students, now and in the future.” NOISE is offering residents a way to show their concern regarding the plans for the new school by selling yard signs (shown above). The signs will be available starting Monday, April 7 for $5 each. Contact NOISE representative Chad Christian at 310-345-9809 to purchase a yard sign.

Several NOISE members have created sample letters for residents to use as a base for writing their own letters to LAUSD. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) comment period closes Monday, May 7. If you have concerns regarding the proposed high school your letters must be received by that date. LAUSD is projecting construction to start June 30, 2010 with an opening date of September 4, 2012.

The PRA has assembled some terms and definitions that you will hear frequently in relation to LAUSD:
Academy: A career academy is typically a school-within-a-school that offers students academic programs organized around broad career themes.
Charter: Charter schools can be fully independent or district-affiliated, maintaining close ties to LAUSD. LAUSD charter schools are open to any child who wishes to attend, from any part of the city. Although certain attendance preferences may be given, enrollment is conducted by lottery.
Continuation School: “Continuation high schools enroll students who have been expelled or dropped out, those with illnesses that keep them out of regular schedules, and teens who need more personalized attention.” according to LAUSD. Angels Gate Continuation High School currently has 60 children enrolled from grades 9 through 12.
Magnet School: A magnet school is a public school specializing in one particular area. San Pedro High School has two magnets: Marine Science and Police Academy. Magnet schools are available to all students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, not just the immediate surrounding area.

If you have concerns about the proposed school two important meetings are coming up:

Monday, April 14, 7:00 p.m. Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council Agenda Meeting. Your vote is needed to get a motion regarding the proposed school on the agenda. The meeting will be held at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Multi-Purpose Room 3720 Stephen White Drive San Pedro CA 90731. The room is to the left of the Auditorium entrance. (DIRECTIONS: Harbor Freeway (110) south; exit at Harbor Boulevard in San Pedro. Right turn onto Harbor Boulevard to 22nd Street. Right turn onto 22nd Street to Pacific Avenue. Left turn onto Pacific Avenue to 36th Street/Stephen White Drive. Left turn at Stephen White Drive to the Cabrillo Beach parking lot.)

Monday, April 21, 6:30 p.m. Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council Governing Board meeting. This is your opportunity to tell the Neighborhood Council members how you feel.
