SurveyLA is the first-ever citywide survey of Los Angeles’ historic resources. Our area is scheduled to be among the first to be surveyed in the first year of the citywide survey, and the City Planning Department Office of Historic Resources needs participation to make sure that those places of importance to us, but unknown to most, are included in the survey. These surveys will help determine future development in our area.

U.S. Constitution Day Celebration

Filed under: Angels Gate, Events, History, Korean Bell, Parks — Jeniffer September 10, 2009 @ 9:01 pm

The Point Vicente Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) hosts a celebration of the U.S. Constitution Day by ringing the Korean Friendship Bell at Angels Gate Park. This event is open to the public and all are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
Information and RSVPs may be made to 310-548-5663

The invitation also states:

“The United States Constitution was signed 222 years ago. Public law 915, signed by President Eisenhower designates September 17th to 23rd Constitution Week. At 4:00 PM Eastern Time bells across America will ring to commemorate the signing of this important document which established our republic as a self governing nation dedicated to the rule by law. This week offers us an opportunity to recall the rights and privileges that such a document provides and protects.

In 1976 the people of Korea presented a 17 ton bell to the people of the United States for our bicentennial. The bell celebrates the U.S. bicentennial, honors veterans of the Korean War, and represents the friendship between two countries. A pagoda like structure overlooking the Pacific Ocean houses the historic bell. It was formerly rung only on July 4th, August 15 (Korean Independence Day) and December 31. For the eleventh year, it will also ring for Constitution Week! Our honored Bell Ringers will be members of the Merchant Marines.”

WHEN: Sunday, September 20, 2009 from 12:30 to 3pm
WHERE: Korean Friendship Bell, Angels Gate Park

Were there UFOs over San Pedro in 1942?

Filed under: Events, Ft. MacArthur, Fundraiser, History — Jeniffer February 6, 2009 @ 5:56 pm

Do you remember the great air raid of February 1942? Civilians and military personnel reports ranged from Japanese bombers to alien spacecraft attacking L.A. It’s still a mystery today.

As a fundraiser for the Fort MacArthur Museum, there will be a recreation of what that 1942 evening would have been like at a dance. Dean Mora and the Fort MacArthur Officers Orchestra will be playing while you dance the night away in period costumes, if you have them. Dress warmly and expect loud noises!

Palisades History

We’ve been up in the attic going through the Palisades Residents Association archives dating back to the mid-60s. There’s a wealth of information there and we’ll be putting some of it up on the website for all the neighborhood to see. So far we’ve added more information to the history page and created a page devoted to the origin of Palisades names.

Grab a hot cocoa (with mini marshmallows, of course), put your feet up and enjoy reading about our home town! Keep your eyes open for future additions.
